Designing Tote for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is fast approaching! Don’t worry, there is still time to give Mom a fantastic, personalized gift that she will use over and over again. Grab an unprinted tote bag, and some fabric markers or paint. Let your kids go to town!

Five great ideas to try:

1. Write a poem

Mom, Grandma, or any other special woman in your life will cherish. Remember to think about cool designs while creating!

2. Use the tote bag as packaging.

Fill the reusable bag with extra goodies! Think jewelry, flowers, candy, or anything else handmade that Mom would love.

3. Think about washable markers for your design.

Kids will have a great time redesigning the tote bag over and over again

4. No kids are too little

All ages can help design a tote bag! Trace hands (or feet for really little ones) on the tote bag for a great family keepsake through the years.

5. Get a box of tote bags!

A box of six tote bags will replace disposable plastic and paper bags for shopping trip. Kids will have fun designing multiple bags. Can’t remember to bring the bags on your trip? Patty gives a great tip: “I use to leave my canvas shopping bags all over the house so I installed a big hook next to the back door to hang my canvas shopping bags on. “

Help celebrate Poetry’s centennial! What started in 1912 is still going strong today. The Poetry Foundation, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, is offering a free poetry tote when you sign up for a subscription of Poetry.

In addition to publishing a monthly magazine, the Poetry Foundation also sponsors several other programs. If you are in Chicago, stop by their building and check out their extensive poetry library, their exhibition space, or even see what events are coming up.

Tote-ing Poetry

Poetry and totes? April was National Poetry Month, and putting the two together can be easier than you might think.

There have been years and years of poets throughout the centuries (maybe one lived near you! ) expressing themselves through the written word. Some poems have been delicate and beautiful, creating stunning visual imagery. Other poetry is less flowery and more direct.

A good poem can create an important cultural statement that will last a lifetime. A good quality tote bag will last almost as long! Think about your tote bag as a form self expression, and challenge yourself think about your words being visually appealing as well.
